Kevin Cordon and Maxime Moreels win their Men’s Singles first round matches: Slovenia International 2011
Guatemala’s Kevin Cordon and Belgium’s Maxime Moreels won their Men’s Singles first-round matches in the Slovenia International 2011, on Thursday, May 12. The number one seed, Cordon, knocked out Vladimir Savic of Serbia in straight sets by consuming just
18 minutes, whereas Maxime spent just 18 minutes to beat Mitja Semrov of Slovenia in a similar fashion.
Cordon started the first set in a stunning way as he played an aggressive game without even taking a few rallies to get used to the conditions of the court. He showed no mercy to Savic, who seemed too overwhelmed playing the number one seed. At the interval
of the opening set, Cordon was ahead at 11-4. He remained positive in the later part of the set and finished it up in just 8 minutes with a completely one sided score of 21-7.
The story of the second set was almost the same as the first one; Cordon remained in complete control of the game. Savic tried to match the speed of the opponent, but failed to put up a strong resistance against an aggressive Cordon. The top seed consumed
only 10 minutes to finish the second set by a 21-10 margin. This 18-minute match ended with a 21-7 and 21-10 score on the board.
In another Men’s Singles match, Maxime Moreels demonstrated a remarkable performance against Mitja Semrov. The local shuttler tried to perform well by playing at the same speed of the opponent but could not dominate the game as he made many unforced errors
in the game. At the interval in the first set, Moreels was leading the game at 11-5.
After the 60-second rest, Moreels stretched his lead by playing a near-perfect game. Semrov lagged behind in all aspects of the game and lost the opening set in just 7 minutes with a huge difference of 7-21.
The Belgian, Moreels put up a superb show of quality badminton in the second set, where he faced no difficulty in setting up a comfortable lead of 11-4 in the opening half. The local had no answer to the powerful and perfectly executed strokes of the opponent
and lost the second set in just 9 minutes. The final score of this one-sided 16-minute match was 21-7 and 21-8.
