Kevin Cordon penetrates into Men’s Singles second round of the 2011 Canada Open Grand Prix
Guatemala’s Kevin Cordon penetrated into the Men’s Singles second round after proving his worth against Canada’s Luke Couture in the opening round of the 2011 Canada Open Grand Prix, in Canada, on Wednesday, July 20.
Cordon stunned everyone in the indoor arena at Richmond DC by playing badminton of the highest class and thrashed Couture in a completely one-sided fight, which took just 19 minutes in the court. Cordon, through his terrific skills, proved that he is ready
to compete at the highest level of the game.
Right from the opening points, Cordon remained ahead of Couture and maintained a firm grip over the pace of the rallies. His control over the bird was impressive and he executed his strokes perfectly, even by hitting from difficult angles. His planned game
against the local shuttler earned him a much required victory to move forward in the tournament.
Cordon wasted no time in prolonging the rallies and he scored points whenever he found a small opportunity. He utilised every chance to stretch his lead in the opening game and was successful in setting up a superb lead of 11-3, in a flash.
After the break, the Canadian shuttler changed his strategy and played fast badminton at the net, but he failed to control the bird and threw away many points by hitting the shuttlecock out of the court. Cordon, on the other hand, was composed and waited
for the right opportunity to execute powerful strokes. He did not face any sort of resistance from his opponent and clinched the opening game with a 21-6 score, in just 8 minutes.
The second set was almost identical to the first one, as Cordon remained in the same mood of finishing the game as soon as possible. Despite of having the support of home crowd, the Canadian failed to play well against Cordon, who won the second set by a
commanding difference of 21-9. This opening round straight-set match ended with a one-sided margin of 21-6 and 21-9.
