Kevin Correia disarm the New York Mets offence as Pittsburgh Pirates win, 9-3: MLB Recap
A night after Pittsburgh Pirates effortlessly overpowered New York Mets by 5-1, Kevin Correia practically manifested his pitching excellence and helped the Pirates rout the Mets by 9-3 on Wednesday, June 1, at Citi Field, New York.
The Wednesday game was a treat to watch. "That was a target area going in, an area of attention, and our guys have responded very well to it." New Pittsburgh's manager Clint Hurdle said. "So at the end of the day it's another mile marker that we're able
to at least put behind us."
The Pittsburgh Pirates, who were not particularly impressive in the last season where they won 17 and lost 64, assumed a surprising view new for the fans and foes alike. The victory was indeed self-assuring and they stand a good chance to sweep the series
3-1 if they manage to win the Thursday night game.
Correia, who incapacitated the Mets’ offence, was a delight with his victory and said, "I like to wait until the end before I start looking at any of that stuff," Correia said. "Unless they post 'em in the Bassmaster magazine or a surfer mag, I don't read
a lot of sports besides those two -- or Golf Digest."
Nevertheless, the Pittsburgh Pirates did not have a very strong start when the game kicked off on Wednesday. Firstly, it were the Mets who got hold of a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when Correia was throwing brilliant pitches.
Ruben Tejada earned a two-run homer in the fourth inning and saw Correia giving up four hits. The lead seemed to have put the Mets in a comfortable position when the Pittsburgh Pirates’ hitters thrashed Chris Capuano in the seventh inning.
Capuano was going fairly well until the seventh inning, but one may call it blunder or a spell of sheer misfortune, Capuano was subjected to seven hits in the seventh inning that earned Pirates no less than five runs.
Chris Snyder, Lyle Overbay, Xavier Paul and Jose Tabata, each scored a run in the inning coupled with Harrison’s infield single to short-stop that literally announced the departure of the Mets from the game. The Pirates, who were trailing behind, had a 5-2
lead after the seventh inning.
If that was not enough, Pirates earned four more runs in the eighth inning when Pedro Beato came for pitching. A 9-2 lead seemed to be sufficient enough for Pirates. Justin Turner homered to the left of the diamond for New York Mets to bring the lead down
to 9-3.
However, Jose Ascanio threw a shutout inning in the 9th inning to give an easy and arguably, emphatic 9-3 victory to the Pirates.
