Kevin Correia’ pitching helps Pittsburgh Pirates defeat Washington Nationals 10-2 – MLB Update
Pittsburgh Pirates’ starter, Kevin Correia had a notable day with the ball as he threw six dominant innings with an ERA of 3.74 in the Pirates’ 10-2 win against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park, Washington on July 3.
In the first inning of the game, the Pirates’ batters were dominated as they exploded three runs and took an initial 3-0 lead. Andrew McCutchen singled off left-centre field and Alex Presley scored the first run. The second run was taken by Chase D’Arnaud
on a single-run shot of Neil Walker towards left-field.
Lyle Overbay drove a shot to right-centre and McCutchen posted the third run of the first inning. The Pirates’ batters stepped on the gas during the second inning and blasted five runs while the Nationals got off the mark with two runs to reduce their lead
8-2.
Garrett Jones doubled to deep centre-field while Presley and D’Arnaud added two runs to increase their team’s lead. Jones scored a single run on the double-run shot of McCutchen towards deep right-centre. McCutchen contributed one run when Walker singled
to shallow right-field and the last run was taken by Walker on the drive of Overbay towards deep right-centre to end the five-run campaign.
Speaking to reporters, McCutchen said, “It's up to us to change that. The majority of people look at us as just being 'the Pirates,' and they're going to say it's 'the Pirates' until we show a difference. Next thing you know they're going, 'Hey, these Pirates
are the real deal.”
On the other side, Wilson Ramos hit a solo homer (391 feet) to left-centre and Rick Ankiel scored the first and last run for the Nationals during the second inning. The pitchers did not permit any run from the third to the fifth inning. Correia allowed just
two runs on six hits including two earned runs and struck-out six batters. He permitted just one walk on his 93 pitches.
During the sixth inning, the Pirates added two runs to get a 10-2 lead when Jones and McCutchen both singled individually to rally their team with a big lead. The last three innings went score-less as the batters failed to put runs on the score-board.
The Pirates were able to tie the four-game series 2-2 with this tremendous victory.
