Kevin Cunningham slams Gary Shaw for failing to help arrange upcoming bout
Kevin Cunningham, WBC junior welterweight titlist Devon Alexander’s manager and trainer, has lashed out at promoter Gary Shaw for allegedly neglecting to properly organise Alexander's next fight because
he's too focussed on a potential future superfight.
Shaw recently told boxingscene.com that following a fight between his fighter Timothy Bradley and Alexander on 29 January, he would have Bradley fight boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao.
Cunningham took huge issue with Shaw’s upcoming plans.
"Gary Shaw has a big fight coming up between his guy Tim Bradley and Devon Alexander. He should be promoting this fight. A fight the magnitude of Bradley-Alexander should have been officially announced
and have a venue lined up already,” Cunningham charged, also speaking to boxingscene.com.
The clash between Bradley, the WBO champion, and Alexander, will undoubtedly be the biggest fight for each and launch of them to the top of their division. Cunningham urged that with that in mind, Shaw
should focus more on the primary task at hand.
"Bradley-Alexander is Devon's biggest fight to date and I think Bradley would agree it's his biggest fight too,” Cunningham said. "This fight should have been announced and we should have all of our press
conferences and tours taken care of already. It’s not fair to break both of these their camps to fly across the country to do press conferences. This is the fight of their lives and they should both be able to properly train for it."
To substantiate his case that affairs weren’t being worked out for his fighter’s upcoming bout, Cunningham cited the upcoming 11 December bout between WBA junior welterweight titlist Amir Khan and Marcos
Maidana.
“[Amir] Khan and [Marcos] Maidana signed their bout agreements and a week later they had done all of their press responsibilities and have time for an eight, nine-week solid training camp without interruption.
I think Devon and Tim deserve the same."
Cunningham said that he couldn’t believe Alexander had signed for the bout over a month ago and that involved parties didn’t have an official announcement or a venue determined.
At that point he turned his attentions back to Manny Pacquiao’s performance last weekend against Antonio Margarito. “I want to congratulate Manny Pacquiao for his performance Saturday night. Every person involved in boxing should be thankful for the contributions
Manny has made to our sport.”
