Kevin Dennerly Minturn and Oliver Leydon Davis win Men’s Doubles title at Auckland International
New Zealand’s Kevin Dennerly Minturn and Oliver Leydon Davis wrap up Men’s Doubles title by winning the final battle against Tom Armstrong and Tjitte Weistra the lower ranked shuttlers from England and New Zealand respectively, at the SOTX Auckland International 2012 on Sunday, June 24, in Auckland.
Kevin and Oliver, who were top seeds in Men’s Doubles draw of the championship, played to their maximum potential in the title match and remained successful in grabbing victory over their second seeded opponents with a decent margin.
The higher ranked Kevin and Oliver played at the best speed and managed to beat Armstrong and Weistra in straight games of 33 minutes by a narrow margin on the score board.
On the other hand, the second seeded Armstrong and Weistra gave a wonderful fight to their higher ranked local rivals but failed in the concluding points of both games and lost the title battle with a respectable score.
In the first game, both pairs showed an impressive play by executing powerful shots from all areas of the court. They did not slow down the pace of rallies at any stage and remained close until the mid-game interval.
After the one-minute break, the top seeded Kevin and Oliver played with aggression and took a reasonable lead.
They were in complete control of rallies and took the first game with a three-point advantage of 21-18.
In the second game, Armstrong and Weistra also showed strong performance when they played at their best and remained successful in sticking around their higher ranked opponents until the one-minute break.
After the mid-game interval, Kevin and Oliver tried to show their class by increasing their speed at net but fail to push their rivals on back foot.
The score reached at the crucial stage of 20-20 when Kevin and Oliver played smartly by taking the bird early and keeping their shots flat.
They were positive on the court and took the set with a tight score of 22-20.
Kevin and Oliver emerged as title winners by ending up the final match with a 21-18 and 22-20 score on the board.
