The 23 year old led USA past Argentina but does believe that performances like the one against Argentina are hard to repeat
After five preliminary round games, team USA have managed to stay undefeated at the London Olympics and were even able to put up some record breaking performances.
In their first match they brushed aside France and followed it up with a 47 rout over Tunisia. The Americans were then able to stomp their dominance in the tournament by putting up a record breaking win over Nigeria. They however did have to face a tough task against Lithuania and had it not been the exploits of LeBron James, USA would not have entered the game against Argentina with a hundred percent win record.
Last night saw team USA go head to head with the South American giants, who are ranked number three in the world, and after the first half, the Americans barely led by 60-59. However having a team full of highly athletic NBA superstars does reap its benefits. LeBron James infused life into the US ranks right at the start of the third quarter and then Kevin Durant came alive to knock down a barrage of triple pointers.
The Oklahoma City Thunder forward pounded 28 points in the ball game on a 8-of-10 shooting from distance, but NBA’s three time scoring champion believes that such performance cannot be repeated on a regular basis and the team needs to be more consistent;
"We can't just turn it on in the third quarter," – Durant
As spectacular as the end result may be, Durant thinks that winning requires a whole new level of focus which team USA seems to lack at the moment.
"Nobody is going to be intimidated by us, especially since everybody has been saying we're so small and we don't have any big guys," Durant said. "So they think it's going to be easier to beat us than before."
"We've got to focus better."
The win against Argentina ensured team USA a top spot in Group A and a quarter final fixture against Australia. However considering how they performed in the first half last night and in the game against Lithuania, teams like Russia and Brazil, who are coming out strongly in the other group, can take a lot of hope.
