Kevin Evans & David George wins the first stage of the Cape Pioneer Trek 2012
Kevin Evans & David George of Team Nedbank 360Life wins the opening stage of the Cape Pioneer Trek 2012 after their storming performance during the event.
The duo rode exceptionally well and completed the 103 kilometre race between Buffelsdrift Game Lodge, Oudtshoorn and Calitzdorp High School, Calitzdorp ahead of their competitors.
They completed the race in a total time of 3 hours, 52 minutes and 57 seconds and marked a convincing victory over their major opponents.
Nico Bell & Gawie Combrinck of Team Westvaal - Columbia) fell 36 seconds behind at the second position with Matthys Beukes & Ben Swanepoel of Team Cango M T B.Com finishing 1 minute and 43 seconds behind at the third position.
Chris Wolhuter & Oliver Munnik of Team Asrin Cycling and Wynand Mulder & Kobus Barnard of Team Klein Karoo Express occupied the fourth and the fifth positions after the opening stage of the race.
"We rode within ourselves until the steep climb at 80 kilometres in and then pushed the pace hard up there. We kept it steady for the final 15km to the finish,” said Evans after finishing the race.
“The others must have ridden those last 15 keys hard because the gaps definitely closed to us by the finish".
"Apparently the first three climbs are really hard - rough and rocky”.
“The 12km mountain climb at the end though is made for us, so we'll be riding with some caution to avoid any mishaps before the last climb".
Ischen Stopforth & Catherine Williamson of Team Bridge - Bizhub Ladies wins the Women category of the race after completing the race in a cumulative time of 4 hours, 32 minutes and 9 seconds.
Yolande De Villiers & Yolande Speedy of Team Klein Karoo Chicks finished 8 minutes and 27 seconds behind at the second position while Sarah Van Heerden & Jackie Church of Team Wilde 2 securing the second and the third positions respectively.
The duo of Kate Slegrova & Caren Henschel (Cycle Training) and Theresa Horn & Miriam Stronkhorst (First Ascent Ladies) claimed the fourth and the fifth positions after the stage 1 of the Cape Pioneer Trek 2012.
