Kevin Garnett reveals he did ponder about retiring in the off season – NBA Update
After the Miami Heat edged out the gritty Boston Celtics in seven games in the Eastern Conference Finals last season, there were many who believed that the NBA might have seen the last of legendary centre Kevin Garnett.
At 36, Garnett is still a beast on the floor, but up against a formidable Miami Heat including the likes of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, a bevy of blue collared sharp shooter and fantastic role players, the chances of
the C’s pulling off a heist are bare minimum in the years to come, even if Garnett plays at his best.
He however decided to give it another go, and signed a three year $ 36 million extension with the C’s during the off season. On Friday, during the media session at the training centre, the seven-footer revealed that he did consider
about retiring;
"I did give it some real thought," said Garnett. "With free agency coming up, I didn’t want to think about another team or anything like that. My retirement, obviously, would have been a personal decision, based on family and whatever
reasons I have.”
KG went on to add that the prospect of playing under Doc Rivers was a major motivator for him to come back;
“My No.1 reason for coming back, obviously, was Doc. Doc being here is huge; I enjoy playing for him. The guys, the city, the fans here are by far the best fans that I’ve ever been a part of.”
Rivers joined as the head coach at Boston a year before the Big Three came into existence. The wily coach led the star studded Celtics to a championship in their very first season together. He has since failed to repeat the feat,
but despite having an old roster; Rivers has managed to keep the C’s relevant. His leadership was perhaps best evident last season, when he carried an injury plagued Celtics roster into the Conference Finals.
He also played a major part in assembling a strong roster this off season and the Celtics look set to give Miami and other championship contenders a run for their money in the season to come.
Garnett and Rivers have a similar - never die – attitude towards the game and it is therefore only natural that the two share a good repertoire.
