Kevin Garnett situation a worry for Boston Celtics, says President Danny Ainge – NBA Update
Boston Celtics veteran Kevin Garnett is set to make a decision on his future in the next week or so, but that time could prove a little more than what the franchise can offer. The legendary power forward has the options to remain with Boston, sign with another
team, or retire from basketball, but he is yet to make up his mind.
Since joining Boston back in 2007, Kevin Garnett formed the corner stone of the Celtics Big Three, with Ray Allen and Paul Pierce the other components. He has been the leader of the Celtics team for the last five years and willed them forward for some very
impressive campaigns, including an NBA World Championship.
His current situation though is precarious. As Garnett holds on, the Celtics remain hostage to his large contract which massively restricts their ability to spend in the free agency. If at the end Garnett decides to retire, or leave Boston for another NBA
franchise, the Celtics would be left with a hollow roster and most free agents could have already been snapped up.
Celtics President Danny Ainge is therefore understandably perturbed, and he is hoping that Kevin makes a decision soon.
"It is complicated and the timing is complicated. Juggling all these different scenarios is difficult," Ainge said. "But the reality is that, on July 1, Kevin Garnett is on our books for $21 million until we either sign him to a new contract, or renounce
him, which means we can't re-sign him. Otherwise, it really limits our cap space."
Ainge though was certain that Garnett will do what is not only best for himself, but also for the Celtics. After all, the future Hall of Famer is renowned for putting the team’s interests ahead of his own through the NBA.
"(Garnett) doesn't want to (hinder Boston's offseason plan)," Ainge said. "He's not looking to do that. Kevin is a team guy. The last thing he wants to do is put us in a tough position. Hopefully he wants to come back."
Garnett is expected to announce his decision sometime early next month.
