Kevin Gregg survives blitz as Baltimore Orioles defeat Detroit Tigers 8-5 – MLB Update
The Baltimore Orioles survived a 9th inning onslaught and beat the Detroit Tigers 8-5 on Sunday, August14 at Oriole Park.
With the lead to their favour, the Orioles’ Kevin Gregg allowed four runs in the 9th but survived other hitters to help Baltimore win.
Gregg startled with the sudden offence mounted by the Tigers, he preferred being taciturn about it: "Let's keep it about the team," Gregg said. "I didn't have a good day, but we did a lot of positive things."
The Detroit Tigers’ manager had a few lamentations and regrets. "I made a move that just backfired. I was trying to save Victor some," Leyland said. "I still felt good with Boeschy going up there, particularly in this park, but it just was a move that didn't
work out."
"Today we fell a little bit short, but we played it right out to the end we just didn't get it," said Detroit manager Jim Leyland, who lamented his decision to remove Martinez in the ninth for pinch-runner Will Rhymes.
Nick Markakis was the first to score for the Baltimore Orioles when the game began on Sunday after Jo-Jo Reyes pitched a shut-out first against the Tigers. The Orioles’ Markakis homered to give his team a safe 2-0 lead.
The lead perpetuated as Robert Andino singled to left in the second inning against Fister, making it 3-0 for the Orioles. Jo-Jo Reyes allowed the first run in the third inning when Ramon Santiago homered to bring it to 3-1 for the Tigers.
However, both the starters then pitched a couple of few innings, allowing none of the hitters of the respective teams to score. The fifth inning, nonetheless, proved to be utterly disastrous for the Tigers.
Doug Fister was first subject to hit by Nick Markakis who singled to make it 4-1 while Vladimir Guerrero had a two-run RBI to take the lead to 6-1 for the Baltimore Orioles. Jo-Jo Reyes was also effective to allow any runs to the Tigers.
With the lead 6-1, Nick Markakis had another RBI in the sixth while Adam Jones followed with another single, making it 8-1 for the Baltimore Orioles against the stumbling Doug Fister. Willie Eyre relieved Reyes and maintained the 8-1 lead.
But as the ninth inning kicked off where the closer Kevin Gregg had to defend the lead, Gregg fumbled and allowed a prohibitively expensive four-run inning.
Alex Avila was the first to score following whom Ramon Santiago hit another RBI. Austin Jackson simultaneously scored a single that was followed by Maggilo Ordonez that gave the Tigers an opportunity to change the course of the game.
But Gregg was successful to send other hitters packing as he wrapped up the game with an 8-5 victory for the Baltimore Orioles.
