Kevin Harvick not happy with finish at New Hampshire – NASCAR news
Kevin Harvick was not a pleased man when he got out of the car at New Hampshire on Sunday, September 25, 2011 having finished in 12th position. The finish cost him his top position in the Chase and now lies in 2nd place,
7 points behind new leader Tony Stewart.
Harvick was puzzled by the fact that the No. 33 car of Clint Bowyer was being driven on a different pit strategy than him and he was out in the first place. Bowyer later ran out of fuel 2 laps before the finish while Harvick made to pit earlier than most
cars.
However, Harvick later said that he did not know what was the situation and he would have fell short by around 10 laps if the team had not made the stop.
He also said that the team did well after looking at the overall picture and minimised the damage that could have been caused. If Harvick had risked going all the way, he could well have ended up in 25th place and that would have
been a huge blow to his championship chances.
While he was not happy with the finish, 12th was a good finish for Harvick given the situation he was in.
“Last week was not the finish we probably deserved,” Harvick said. “We had some circumstances that dictated some strategy moves we had to make to guard against a 25th-place finish. You don’t want to race for 10th or 12th, but sometimes you just have to take
what the car will give you.”
Harvick also said that the fact that he had changed pit crews with Clint Bowyer was not a source of distraction for him and he wanted to focus on his racing alone, with minimal outside interferences.
“It’s all about 29 [his car],” Harvick said. “Whether it’s about on-the-track [stuff] and off-the-track, it’s about my guys and RCR and myself, and that’s it. Anything else we bring on ourselves is our own fault.”
Harvick will now be heading to Dover where he is yet to win a race in the Sprint Cup. Harvick will be looking to set that statistic right and regain the top spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
