Kevin Johnson-Alex Leapai IBF Australasian championship bout postponed by two weeks - Boxing news
Kevin Johnson, who was scheduled to bout Alex Leapai, the current IBF Australasian heavyweight champion, has cancelled his March 18, 2012 engagement due to inappropriate health conditions as a result the bout will now take place on April 1, 2012.
As per the details, Kevin was bound to take on Alex for his title and everything was going as per the schedule so much so that even Johnson was out of his house to reach Australia for the bout. Things got ambiguous and later on the skirmish was altogether
postponed when Kevin was reported to have caught severe flu in New Jersey.
The critics and especially Alex camp have considered this delay as an excuse put forth by Kevin to evade Leapai’s brutal punishment but Johnson has vehemently denied all such accusations and puns adding that he will obliterate the Aussie in just eight rounds.
Kevin, 32, has been in a total 27 bouts and has emerged as a victor in 25. He has collected just 11 bouts by knockout and seriously lacks the ability to throw a heavy duty raw powered jab. This will be the second time that the American blabber Kevin will
enter in a title bout.
Last time Johnson, widely known as the ‘Kingpin’, fought Vitali Klitschko for the WBC heavyweight title and lost the bout via unanimous decision. This was the only loss that Kevin has received in his whole career. Alex, on the other hand, is a resilient,
hardcore, knockout pugilist who strives hard to collect a win in the initial rounds via knockout.
The 32-year-old Alex, well known as ‘The Lionheart’, has been in a total 31 bouts and came out victorious in 25. He has collected 20 of his total wins by knockout. Alex is on a huge win streak and lost his career’s last bout to Colin Wilson via split decision.
The Aussie number one grabbed his IBF gold from Okello Peter after knocking him out in the third round. This will be the Australian Lionheart’s first title defence. According to the details Kevin called Noel Thornberry, his promoter, and requested for a
two week delay since he has got flu and needs to recover from it.
Johnson, when asked about whether Alex’s camp is true and he is afraid, said, “I hate to do it but I am going to end this boy’s career. Alex, your promoter is setting you up. You won’t make it through eight rounds.”
The above comment will definitely be tested when the duo meets at Doomben Racecourse arena situated in Ascot, Queensland, Australia on April 1, 2012 for the 12-round championship bout.
