Kevin Kim destroys Takanyi Garanganga in 2nd qualifying – Charlottesville Challenger 2011
American Kevin Kim destroyed Zimbabwe Takanyi Garanganga in the second qualifying round of Charlottesville Challenger 2011.
It took Kim just sixty two minutes to get rid of Garanganga on indoor hard courts of the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Virginia. Kim scored 6-1, 6-3 to destroy his adversary on Sunday the 30th of October 2011.
Kim dominated the first set of the match by hitting 79 percent of his first serves on target. He then accomplished an ostentatious 91 percent of her first service points won and had a geometric precision.
Moreover, with a sturdy defence he did not setup a single breakpoint opportunity in the opening set and he had an exceptional return which assisted him in achieving a total of 59 percent of his total return points won.
Mean while, Garanganga had a poor serve along with a poor return and was only able to achieve half as many total points won as Kim.
Initiating the first round of the match was Garanganga and he got off to an appalling start as he was unable to hold his serve. On the other hand, Kim had reeled straight two games by capitalizing on an early break and placed himself with a mini lead on the scoreboard with a 2-0. He further increased his lead to 4-0 by the end of the fourth game with a break and hold of serve.
It was in the fifth game that Garanganga made a return by holding his serve but he was unable to match his opponent’s style and technique. During the last two games, Kim held his serve in the sixth game and then in the seventh benefitted from a breakpoint to bag the opening set with a breadstick victory. He was now one up in the match.
After taking a beating in the opening set Garanganga learnt his lesson and pulled up his socks. He had taken a notch higher in his service game and was able to accomplish a 62 percent of his total service points won in the second set. Nevertheless, the Zimbabwean had put up a good competition but was unable to win the second set either.
The second set was initiated by Kim and he kicked open the scoreboard at 1-0. Following in his footsteps was Garanganga and he too placed himself on the scoreboard. In the following four games the players matched a blow for a blow and the score eventually tied at 3-3 by the end of the sixth game.
During the seventh game Kim held his serve and was leading the game with a 4-3 score. He then capitalized on a lucky break in the eighth game and as he served for the match, he smashed a forehand winner to seal his victory of the set and the match.
Next up for the American is Australian Carsten Ball in the final qualifying round of the event.
