Kevin Love praises the outgoing Minnesota Timberwolves coach Kurt Rambis – NBA Update
In a recent interview, the face of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Kevin Love showered praise on the outgoing head coach Kurt Rambis. Rambis, the Minnesota Timberwolves coach for the last two seasons was finally fired this week by
the organization. The fact that Rambis was on his way out was confirmed around a month ago after Rambis had sat around for two months prior to that, expecting the inevitable.
The Timberwolves management inexplicably withheld their decision for such a long time and the measure has been criticised by a lot of NBA analysts. It has been suggested in some quarters, that Minnesota GM David Kahn wanted a replacement
in place, before he finally let go of Rambis. That theory however falls short of the mark, now that Rambis has been fired and the Timberwolves have still not decided on a successor.
Kevin Love, the star player at the Timberwolves franchise, did not always see eye to eye with his former head coach. His frosty relationship with Kurt is believed to be one of the reasons why the latter was fired. However, Kevin
is not one to kick someone while they are down and praised his outgoing coach saying he is not one to be unemployed for long,
“(Rambis) was put in limbo for a while by our front office. They took their time and weighted all their options. Kurt’s going to find another opportunity. He’s going to get another job soon.”
Love has developed into one of the premier forwards in the league in the last few seasons and averaged a very impressive 20.2 points per game last season and also led the NBA in rebounding with an average of 15.2 a game.
He is the undoubted centre piece of the Minnesota project and the franchise is now starting to surround him with talented young players. The Timberwolves have added Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio, who was drafted as the 5th
overall pick back in 2009, to their roster this offseason. Rubio is now expected to take over as starting point guard.
Another promising addition is Derrick Williams, drafted by Minnesota as the 2nd overall pick this year. Williams is brimming with confidence after having the best season by any player in college basketball last year.
Although, the future for Minnesota looks promising, Kevin Love knows that in order to steady and guide this ship they need a battle tested captain. He discussed the need for someone capable to replace Kurt Rambis as the head coach
of the side, someone who can take these young players and turn them into a strong unit that can achieve some success,
“You always hope for the best. I want to have a great relationship with whoever coaches the Timberwolves or whoever coaches me throughout my career….As far as us having a young team,” Love said, “we’re going to need, I won’t say
a disciplinarian, but a guy who can teach us how to win and has been there and done that.”
Whether David Kahn and company will be able to give Love and the Wolves, the punch they require, remains to be seen.
