Kevin Pauwels wins the UCI World Cup Round # 5 in Namur
Kevin Pauwels continued his splendid 2012 form and managed to bag yet another victory at the UCI World Cup Round # 5, this Sunday.
He rode brilliantly throughout the race and managed to occupy the top podium position, restricting his major opponents.
Pauwels took a total time of 1 hour, 2 minutes and 47 seconds to occupy the top podium position confining his key opponents including Sven Nys and Niels Albert.
The Belgian was delighted after winning the race in Namur and the course was really tough and was not the best of tracks to suit his abilities but he managed to get his nose ahead once he was given the chance and consolidated his lead till the final lap.
"It was a tough course, and that's usually not my thing, but during the second lap, I took over the command and rode my own pace. I noticed I got a gap. It's very comfortable to ride around here at your own pace. In the closing laps, I was even able to
take my foot of the gas and consolidate my lead," said Pauwels.
He further added, "There are three [World Cup] courses left [in Zolder, Rome and Hoogerheide] that should suit me well. So things are looking good”.
The 28-year-old is enjoying a fantastic season with several super performances across the year including first place finishes in World Cup rounds at Tabor, Igorre, Heusden, Zolder and Hoogerheide.
Sven Nys of Team Landbouwkrediet-Euphony finished 48 seconds behind at the second position with Niels Albert of Team BKCP-Powerplus securing the third spot with a deficit of 1 minute on the race leader.
Francis Mourey of Team FDJ-Big Mat secured the fourth position with Klaas Vantornout, Bart Aernouts, Thijs Van Amerongen, Lars Van Der Haar, Tom Meeusen and Niels Wubben occupying the fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth positions in the respective
order.
Niels Albert of Team BKCP-Powerplus still leads the Elite Men World Cup Standings after five rounds with a total number of 345 points in his back pocket, while Sven Nys of Team Landbouwkrediet-Euphony and Kevin Pauwels of Team Sunweb-Revor secures the second
