Exiled England cricketer Kevin Pietersen is reported to have a meeting lined up with the England and Wales Cricket Board management this Saturday, as both parties aim to resolve their differences and reach an agreement following a prolonged spat.
Pietersen, frequently at odds with the ECB management, made the shocking decision to announce his retirement from international limited-overs cricket earlier this year, claiming the team’s schedule was too hectic to allow him to play in all formats of the game.
A staunch advocate of participation in the Indian Premier League (towards which the ECB has maintained a hostile attitude), he asked to be allowed to play on in T20Is while retiring from one-days – however, ECB rules do not allow players to participate in only one of the shorter formats of the game.
The tension between the two parties reached a pitch during http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757’s ongoing tour of England – despite scoring an impressive century during the second Test of a 3-match series, Pietersen called a press conference following his feat, in which he threatened to quit Test cricket if his concerns were not taken into account.
These included his desire to pick and choose matches (chiefly the intent to skip series for the sake of playing the IPL), as well as alleged issues in the England dressing room, where he claimed he felt ostracised. The situation was worsened by the discovery that Pietersen had sent provocative texts regarding England team officials to members of the Proteas squad.
The right-hander released a video on YouTube shortly after the revelation, in which he apologised, confirmed his allegiance to the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AJ-Strauss-c964 announced his retirement soon after (although he claimed the decision had nothing to do with the Pietersen saga).
The most recent development sees Pietersen set to meet with director of cricket http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hugh-Morris-c63550 this weekend in an attempt to iron out differences and reach a reconciliation.
The negotiations, however, are not likely to be helped by a recently published interview Pietersen gave to The Cricketer magazine a month ago (3 weeks prior to the second Test at Headingley), in which he reinforces his supportive stance on the Indian Premier League, in addition to criticising the ECB for their reluctance to accept the T20 league.
“Test cricket is right up there, most definitely, but IPL and Twenty20 cricket is a matter of fact now,” the magazine quotes Pietersen as saying. “Every board has accepted it apart from the ECB, unfortunately. Some part of international cricket may have to give because the IPL is not going away. No one in their right mind would turn down the contracts I have been offered.”
