England’s all-rounder Kevin Pietersen cut South Africa’s pace attack down to size by exhibiting wits against the likes of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/M-Morkel-c73528 on the third day of the second Test, at Headingley, Leeds.
The South African born, KP, made an early charge against the Proteas bowlers in order to break their concentration and halt the bowling onslaught which was quite effective before the all-rounder’s arrival.
With England having lost four wickets at tea for 183, it was imperative for KP to lead the batting attack in a bid to humble South Africa’s first innings tally of 419.
Speaking on his confrontation with Steyn, the all-rounder said, “I tried to go through the gears today. Once I'd seen how much swing there was, I wanted to try to have a go at Steyn and get him out of the attack.”
“He runs at you all the time, you can't just take it all the time. The field was up and I was seeing it well so I tried to get after him,” the flamboyant all-rounder added.
Defending his aggressive mode against Morkel, KP argued, “With that attack, especially when Morkel came around the wicket, it's him or me. I don't see the point in dodging the ball and being hit, I'd rather do the hitting."
Expressing satisfaction on the position his team is in now, he believes that England will better their standing if they bat well tomorrow.
The blitz of an innings by KP led England to a tally of 351 for five at stumps, where the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c749 batsman is now just one run away from hammering his 150.
However, England are still not out of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Woods-c98113 as South Africa have the pace attack capable to ruining any side on a given day.
England need to bat well on the fourth day to reach something around 600 runs and then give the visitors a tough time on the final day, aiming to bowl-out the South Africans and level the series.
On Saturday, South Africa’s M Morkel, VD Philander and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JH-Kallis-c1692 shared one wicket each, while Steyn took the lead by securing two wickets.
