Kevin Satchell pins Paul Edwards to grab Commonwealth flyweight title – Boxing News
Kevin Satchell, the emerging British flyweight proud, grabbed an impressive win over fellow countryman Paul Edwards, the former BBBC British flyweight champion, and grabbed the vacant Commonwealth (British Empire) flyweight title, his career’s very first
title.
Paul and Kevin fought on the undercard of the pay-per-view headlined by the BBBC British heavyweight title bout between David Price and Sam Sexton. The event was promoted by Frank Maloney of Maloney Promotions and was co-headlined by the BBBC British light
welterweight title bout between Ashley Theophane and Darren Hamilton.
Kevin, 23, was the underdog and though possessed a flawless resume with seven wins in seven bouts yet was outclassed by Paul’s experience and win ratio. Also known as the ‘Satch’, Kevin has nailed none of his opponents by knockout and since the inception
of his career was on an undefeated streak. The young lad gained media’s attention in his last fight with Martin Power.
Martin has a clear upper hand in experience but Kevin out boxed him and nailed him via point basis decision. His Saturday night opponent, Paul, 25, was entering in his career’s 11th bout and boasted nine wins.
He has collected three of his wins by knocking the opponent out cold and has also proudly held the BBBC British flyweight title. He has lost just one bout to Chris Edwards, a bout in which he also lost his newly acquired British gold.
Edward was coming from an impressive win over rookie Stefan Slavchev and had the odds substantially in his favour. But his plans did not come to fruition as Kevin outclassed Paul in almost all the significant facets of the sport.
Kevin who reduced his weight and moved down to flyweight division was visibly dominant during the whole bout and to some critics the engagement seemed to be a one-sided one since Kevin was not only swift on his feet but also connected powerful jabs every
now and then.
During the 10th round, after taking a huge amount of beating, Paul and his corner decided to throw in the towel eventually accepting their defeat. After the impressive win bout, Satchell stated, “I just think I was hungrier for the title and that I was a
lot fitter and stronger. People underestimated me because they thought I would have problems getting down to the weight. But I have been training for 10 weeks and dieting for that long as well so knew I would be fine.”
Kevin is now eyeballing Chris Edwards, the BBBC British flyweight champion, and while sharing his thoughts remarked, “I will go on and win that. It will be amazing to think that in just over two years I will have become British and Commonwealth champion.
That will be amazing. He looks very, very fit, comes forward and throws a lot of shots.”
Satchell now has eight wins in total eight bouts whereas Paul has grabbed his second career loss.
