Kevin Schwantz claims Casey Stoner can beat Mick Doohan in GP wins – MotoGP news
Former 500cc World Champion Kevin Schwantz has claimed that Casey Stoner of Repsol Honda can easily surpass his compatriot, Mick Doohan’s MotoGP win record.
After a stunning performance and win at Laguna Seca, Stoner has strengthened up his 2011 MotoGP championship lead with 20 points.
Schwantz said, “It’s like Mick's first championship, the Honda's were really coming into dominant form and the depth of the field is strong. Casey is a young guy, so he could beat Mick’s tally if he stays healthy. As Casey showed earlier this year, he can
rack up wins pretty quick and he's got time on his side.”
Presently, the young Australian rider holds 28 wins in his MotoGP racing career just being 25 years old. Stoner has been really successful after moving to the Repsol Honda team. With right opportunities and equipment, he has been quick to collect wins in
this season. On the other side, Schwantz also compared his first win which he collected a year ago.
Considering the Australian veteran, Mick Doohan holds a record of 54 premier class race wins in his full span of MotoGP career. His racing era in premier class spans from 1994 to 1998. In his career’s last season, Doohan faced several injuries which hampered
his racing career and forced him to retire.
Schwantz added, “For Mick the worst thing will be if another Australian rider beats his record. Casey's only 25 and I only won my first GP in 1988 when I was 24. And Casey's got 28 wins at 25!”
With his outstanding performance so far in the 2011 season, he has been able to score 5 wins out of 10 events held. In addition, he has also bagged 4 podium finishes.
Looking at the present season and his 2007 championship title, he claimed that Stoner will comfortably be able to pass Doohan’s record.
Casey Stoner holds a decent lead from Jorge Lorenzo in the 2011 MotoGP world championship. However, still he is in fighting range of Lorenzo and the next round at Brno, Czech Republic will define the new championship leader of 2011.
