Kevin Thomson backs manager Gordon Strachan
Middlesbrough midfielder Kevin Thomson has backed Middlesbrough manager under fire Gordon Strachan to turn around their poor form in the league.
Middlesbrough were tipped as the favourites to gain promotion, but the club is in 18th place. Strachan’s team has only managed to take 11 points from 10 games and the manager is already under pressure.
However, Thomson believes that Strachan will turn the team’s fortunes around and said, "We've got a great manager, he's the man to get us in the right direction."
The 25-year-old believes that the players are capable of winning the League Championship, despite their poor start.
"We've got the squad and certainly the individual talent to compete and win this league. There's not many players you would swap in this team for any others in the Championship."
Strachan has had a poor record since he took over the club from Gareth Southgate and a number of fans have already voiced their discontent with the manager.
Thomson said, "The players and the manager will come under pressure when results don't go our way and there's fans' unrest and frustration."
The midfielder believes that Middlesbrough’s teamwork and attitude will allow them to turn their season around.
"The boys are a great group, we like to socialise together, a good blend of experience and talent coming through,” said Thomson.
“Unfortunately we haven't got off to the best start but the lads are working hard, sweating their guts out there on the training field to get things up and running,” added the Scottish international.
Strachan has had a good record while managing Celtic and Coventry City, but he has failed to push for a promotion place since taking over the club in October 2009.
Thomson has stated that getting rid of the manager would be a backward step.
"People who question if he's the man for the job need to look in the mirror,” said the midfielder.
