Kevin Windham sees an early end to season following an accident at Houston Supercross
Kevin Windham has verified that he will remain out of action for the rest of the Monster Energy American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Supercross Championship, an International Motorcyclist Federation (FIM) event, following an accident during heat race
this past weekend in Houston, Texas.
The 34-year-old GEICO Honda team was squaring off with JGRMX/Yamaha’s James Stewart in a heat race at the Houston Supercross this past weekend when he ended up crashing and sustaining injuries that included a dislocation of his right shoulder, damages to
right hip, as well as left wrist and thumb.
The injuries will keep the AMA Supercross veteran sidelined for the rest of the season.
“I've definitely got a dislocated shoulder so that ends my season right there,” Windham said. “I've had my wrist examined by two doctors; one said it was broken and the other one said it's not. It's very swollen and black and blue so it's hard for them to
tell. I'm going to see another specialist and have an MRI done to see exactly what's up. We just need get it fixed properly.”
Heading into the Houston Supercross on Saturday, April 7, the Centreville-based rider was sitting at fifth place in the overall season standings. However, the crash that cost him his place in the main event as well as the rest of the season moved him to
seventh place.
The recent Supercross weekend also saw an end to Windham’s streak of racing in the AMA Supercross main event. The streak, which ended at 102, began in mid-2006 and was expected to increase as the GEICO Honda team rider had been going strong this season,
making a couple of podium finishes.
Windham has conceded that he is far from done yet as far as his AMA Supercross career is concerned. He may have been forced out of action this year, but the next year will see him return to have another go at the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship
title.
“Staying healthy has been a big part of my career going this long,” said Windham. “But even after this one I'm not done. I'll be back for sure.”
The main event of Houston Supercross was won by Monster Energy/ Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, which crowned him as the AMA Supercross Champion for the second year in a row.
