Darwin didn't know anything about DNA or Mendelian genetics (heredity).  He states himself in Origin that this is something he lacks in his theory.

Darwin didn't know the source of variation and heredity.  Research since the time when Darwin published his observations and analysis have proven that this source is DNA.  In fact, the whole field of genetics didn't really exist until about 60 years ago.

There are no missing pieces that would render the theory of evolution incorrect because there is so much supporting evidence from so many different fields of science.

Some might argue that the beginning of life is a missing point.  However, the theory of evolution concerns the mechanisms of change, not origins.

These are just a few. Here are some components that made his theory flourish, not correct, but flourish.

The religious faith of Naturalism. The funding by evil governments, marxist banks, and monopolizing big business.

The thought that life could exist without God was too tempting for this theory to let die even though there is no evidence for it. Fund anything enought billions of dollars and there will be enough false conjecture brought up as evidence to convince the masses.
