If I teach myself how to play the keyboard, will I be able to play the piano? I know that its basically the same, but is it any different at all?

Oh, and will it be easier for me to learn how to play the piano since I play the flute?

  1. Yes. If you learn keyboard you can apply everything to piano. high quality keyboards can mimic pianos pretty decently, it might not be like a high quality piano but is just fine for what you need. the most important thing to remember is that some keyboards are more like pianos than others. You want a touch sensitive keyboard with at least one pedal. Keyboards are cheaper and don't require the maintenance that a piano requires. Pianos go out of tune and have many moving parts. I suggest you start on a decent keyboard then if you really like it you can eventually get a good piano.

    Any music experience always helps!

  2. You will know how to read music... so that's good and you will be ahead of the gang that knows nothing. I learned to play piano on a keyboard and I did just fine. But after a year I switched over to playing everything on a real piano. Keyboards are ok for beginner piano becuase it has a limited number of octaves and when you are just starting out your fingers aren't always strong enough or used to real piano keys for everything. When your hands get a bit stronger and piano fingerings make sense then switch over to a real piano becuase the real piano will feel very different to you. So yes... you can start on keyboard and switch over... but i wouldnt spend anymore than 6 months to a year on the keyboard before you switch over. Good Luck!

  3. It's all basically the same...but, the piano may have more keys than your keyboard depending what kind of keyboard you have. There are also the 2 or 3 pedals on the piano, but it's usually pretty easy learning how to use them.

It should be easy to learn to play piano...you will already know how to read treble cleff, however, it may be tough transitioning from treble to bass cleff when you need to coordinate the two lines of music.
