Khan believes Peterson rematch is possible if drugs are not involved – Boxing News
British-Pakistani boxer Amir Khan believes he can go head to head with Lamont Peterson, only if he is assured that Peterson is off drugs.
Khan lost his WBA and IBF unified super lightweight titles to Peterson in December last year. Both pugilists were set for a rematch this year in May, just when news of Peterson failing a drug test came in. The rematch was immediately cancelled, making Khan lose his shot to regain the titles.
In his recent interview, Khan, who believes Peterson is a cheat, said, "Well basically Lamont Peterson is a cheat! We knew from day one that there was something there that I have never seen before, in the fight against me he was coming forward, and have never seen him come forward so much and be so aggressive and take so many shots and come back from them being put down twice in first round and him using his head and everything, it was a tough fight!"
He added that he knew something was wrong in his December encounter with Peterson. Khan expressed his excitement over Nevada State Athletic Commission's drug test, calling it a way of cleaning the sport. Lastly, Khan said that he will leave the decision to the commission, as to whether they want to ban Peterson or take his titles away.
Khan was asked if there is any possibility of a rematch against Peterson. The former titlist claimed that the match would only be possible once he is assured Peterson is off drugs. Khan further said that it will be a great fight for his fans and so he will go for it, despite his difference with Peterson. According to Khan, if he fights while Peterson is on drugs, his life and career will be in danger.
Khan believes that the only reason Peterson survived the fight against him was that the former was on steroids. Even Hall of Famer coach Freddie Roach backs up Khan’s claims. In a recent interview, Roach claimed that Peterson survived Khan’s attacks because he was on drugs or else he would have fallen in the initial rounds.
