Khan one step closer to Jaguars takeover as NFL finance committee approves deal – NFL News
As had been anticipated Jacksonville Jaguars $760 deal was unanimously approved by the National Football League (NFL) finance committee, which met to review the acquisition at NFL headquarters in New York on 6th of this month (December 2011).
The committee has now recommended the Khan's bid for the Jaguars takeover to clear its next hurdle, the vote by the full ownership committee of the NFL. The committee will meet next week and it is likely to give a go ahead to the takeover.
The deal had already been approved by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and with expected green signal from the membership committee it will be declared close on January 6 2012. The 32-member franchises owners committee is meeting to vote on December 14 (2011). Pakistan-born American entrepreneur Shahid Khan will then be able to take over the Jaguars from its outgoing owner Wayne Weaver.
Mr Khan turned down the media request on Monday for his comments on whether he will continue to keep the Jaguars in Jacksonville, saying he would first wait for approval of the deal. He later however gave a hint which might prove an answer to it in the longer run.
"Hopefully the vote goes the way we're expecting; I'll be happy to elaborate on that, and (fans) will not be disappointed," Khan said.
The deal is approved by the fans too, who during Jaguars' match against the San Diego Chargers on Monday wore T-shirts with 'Yes We Khan' inscribed on them. They also donned fake moustache emulating him (Shahid Khan).
Khan, who did not attend Jaguar's Monday night game saying that he wanted the outgoing owner Wayne Weaver to be spotlight, said that he was surprised by the fans show-off.
"I've got to tell you -- it was the best-looking group of fans I've ever seen," Khan said with a chuckle. "They looked beautiful. I was really surprised. It was wonderful. It’s a day I'm going to remember for a long time."
Jaguar’s deal was announced last week by its outgoing owner Wayne Weaver, minutes after firing of Del Rio, ending his nine-year stay with the Jaguars as a head coach. Their defensive coach Mel Tucker is now performing coaching role under interim arrangements.
