Khan vs Peterson rematch: A fight that will test resilience against perseverance once again
With WBA(World Boxing Association) and IBA(International Boxing Association) confirming the rematch between the British boxer Amir Khan and American Lamont Peterson, the stage will soon be set for a mouthwatering bout. The winner will become the ultimate
champion while the loser will be reduced to a mere disappointed figure.
Who will win the rematch? This question can definitely be answered only on the fight night but we can speculate whether who is the most favourite boxer to hold sway. There has been much hue and cry since the two met last in December last year.
Controversies, one after another, marred the entire taste of the fight. It also did not allow the winner Peterson to dabble in glory. For sure, the losing boxer Amir Khan left no stone unturned to get the questionable result of the match overturned. Finally,
he had his voice heard and the rematch was confirmed.
Now that Khan has withdrawn his appeal, it could potentially see him have the result changed to no contest. It is a right call. In a way, he has made sure that he will not be staging some more press conferences to protest the partiality of the referees or
tweeting some more evidences of the mystery man meddling with the referees.
In retrospect, Khan was being dubbed as the favourite to knock Peterson out. But it did not happen. The fight night had something else in store for him. Probably, because he had come into the fight with a well-deserved victory over Zab Judah, he was the
favourite. However, he disappointed himself or from his standpoint, refs disappointed him and his fans.
It was not just the controversial aspect of the night that Khan can hide behind or use it as a pretext to debunk Peterson’s show of strength and technique. Without a doubt, Peterson was at his best. With perseverance, agility, skill, and consistency, he
managed to resist the power and skills of Khan.
He deserves much credit and applause for the performance he showed. He has set the tone for another classic fight with Khan. The fight that will put an end to the controversy, the fight that will test the nerves of both the boxers and more importantly the
fight that will define who is the best is upon us.
The rematch is supposed to take place within 180 days. Given the heated war of words between the two camps, no boxer would like to evade it.
Khan has a knack for exhibiting resilience when it comes to the matters of victories and defeats. He encountered a shock defeat at the hands of the lightweight Breidis Prescott in 2008.
Nevertheless, he made a strong comeback in the same year defeating Oisin Fagan. Khan knocked him down twice in the first two rounds and won the fight easily.
Peterson should be lauded for showing the true sportsmanship and athleticism. He is not the sort to stay down or get carried by the fear of losing the coveted belts. Soon after the fight, he made it clear that he was least bothered about the results or referee’s
alleged biasness and partiality.
His job is to fight and he was up for it. There is no point of escaping from the danger in his plans.
In all likelihood, Khan can once again be tipped as the favourite to win the rematch against Peterson but it will be a rematch to savor.
With emotions running high and Khan seeking to avenge the controversial defeat at the hands of Peterson, WBA and IBF have finally arranged for the rematch allowing the world to see who has a stronger punch.
