Khawaja’s century sets up Derbyshire victory - Cricket News Update
In the Group C game of the Clydesdale Bank Pro-40 Championship, Derbyshire managed to overhaul the Unicorns at Chesterfield by 35 runs. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Usman-Khawaja-c2729 was the top scorer with 104 off just 110 deliveries.
The Unicorns won the toss and asked Derbyshire to bat first in conditions conducive to seam bowling. The first wicket partnership helped the batting side come up with an impressive stand of 138 in 26 overs. Khawaja was supported by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chesney-Hughes-c1233, who scored
a brisk 66 off just 73 deliveries. Both batsmen managed to secure strike rates in the 90s before Hughes was dismissed in the 26th over.
The innings from that point onwards was derailed, largely due to tight bowling from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wes-Durston-c2789 managed
to score a respectable 44, after the stand between Hughes and Khawaja was broken. The latter part of the innings saw a series of single figure scores for the Derbyshire which meant that they eventually had to settle for 235 for 7 in 40 overs.
Needing 5.87 runs an over from the start, the Unicorn’s innings started off well as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bradley-Lewis-Wadlan-c48301 managed 43 in just 8 overs. Ord’s dismissal was followed by Wadlan’s, where the latter was dismissed by a fine catch by Wainwright for 29. An
impressive partnership was then formed by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mark-Turner-c1911 to dismiss Reece for 59 lead to a complete loss of momentum for
the Unicorns, as wickets continued to tumble. They eventually folded to 200, which was 35 short of their target.
One of the prime reasons for the Unicorn’s collapse was the bowling efforts of seamer Mark Turner. Despite being known as a skilled paceman with the new ball in the English domestic circuit, Turner’s death bowling proved equally critical. The Unicorn batsman
faltered miserably as the run rate continued to rise. Turner’s wickets included crucial breakthroughs, where he snared the likes of Park and Tripathi. This was instrumental in derailing the run chase, which at one stage, looked like a possibility for the Unicorns.
This result helps Derbyshire gain 2 further points in Group C of the table. They are placed fourth behind http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Northamptonshire-c824,
with five points and a net run rate of -1.756.
