Khromacheva, Bouchard qualify for Girls’ Singles third round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Irina Khromacheva, the world number 513 and tournament's third seed, had been sublime in her third round demolition of the American and slowly grew in composure, but was finding Catherine Harrison a determined and powerful opponent.
Russia’s third seed, Khromacheva had her serve broken in the opening games of each set but she fully recovered with some aggressive tennis to beat the American 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-2 taking two hours and ten minutes of play.
The Russian player underlined her image as the better returner of two by treating some of Harrison’s thunder strokes with a lot of pride. Harrison could only hit five aces as opposed to Khromacheva’s eleven, who had figured out
where to play.
The Russian’s second serve could been the reason of her defeat in set two, but in the third set she used her devastating forehands to crack some brilliant winners all over the court.
The athleticism of the Russian was impressive, running after the ball like anything and returning the ball with some great interest as an epic second set consequently went to a tie-break.
Harrison, though, was finding her range as she moved 6-5 ahead before closing out the set 7(8)-6(6) to level the match.
There was little to choose between both the players, as the final set looked to have nerve-jangling tense conclusion. However, Khromacheva’s fans finally found their voice again as the Russian eventually broke Harrison’s resistance
to lead 4-2.
The 16-year-old Khromacheva was beginning to showboat, executing another forehand winner as she started to enjoy the match for the first time at 5-2.
The Russian scored the win by holding her next service game to love, finishing off with the resurgence mode at 6-4, 7(8)-6(6), 6-2 in two hour and ten minutes of play.
Moving on to Wimbledon’s next big challenge, she will now face Daneika Brothwick of Great Britain in the third round of the tournament.
In another second round match from the day, Eugenie Bouchard of Canada scored an easy straight sets victory over the Austrian Barbara Hass to race up to the third round of the tournament.
With such an exquisite control over the ball, Bouchard managed to clinch her 6-0, 6-3 victory in just 59 minutes of play. She proved herself to be the better player statically, winning a whopping 22 winners while committing just
thirteen unforced errors.
She will next face Krista Hardebeck of America in the third round of Wimbledon Championships.
