Swansea City’s latest acquisition, Ki Sung-Yueng, let out his excitement of winning the Bronze medal for his country in the Olympic Games, which allowed him to make a move to the Premier League.
Korea beat Great Britain in the quarterfinals and went on to edge http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Japan-c2928 in the bronze medal game, to become only the second Asian team to a claim a medal in Olympics.
Consequently, the midfielder managed to reduce his compulsory two-year military service in his country to just four weeks.
All the citizens of Korea are required to serve two years in the military. However, the athletes, who make it into the Olympic podium, are exempted from the duty, and are instead required to serve for just four weeks.
After claiming the bronze medal with his country in the London games, the 23-year old went on to sign a three-year deal with the Swans last week.
Sharing his Olympic experience with the media, Ki unravelled his delight on achieving the historical feat, underscoring that it had served to bolster his football career.
He explained that he would have returned to Korea within the next couple of years, had he not won the Bronze medal, but now instead, can focus on his EPL future.
“I was thinking I would go back to Korea to do my military service for two years, join a Korean club and then retire – but now I can change my plan,” he said.
“If I did not win bronze I would have to go back within four years, now I can play for 10 or 12 more years. It’s good news.”
The midfielder played against Swansea City in a pre-season match last summer during his time at Celtic, which the Welsh outfit went on to win 2-0.
Ki revealed that he was thoroughly impressed with the Swans style of play after the game, and cited it as the major reason behind his move to the Liberty Stadium.
“When I played against them I was very impressed by the style of football they played and they did very well last season. So the main reason I came here is the lovely football they play,” he added.
