When paying the registration fee at a kibbutz, they ask for US dollars instead of Shekels. Why is this? Would it be cheaper to exchange currency when at the airport or in Israel?

  1. Until last year, the dominant pricing in Israel for real-estate and rent was in US$, because it was a stronger currency than the Shekel, but today pricing in shekels is much more dominant.

it's quite possible that the kibbutz hasn't adjusted yet, or maybe it's because most of their audience is American and they don't want to raise the fee.

You should probably verify it, but I'm pretty sure that you still pay in Shekels, but the exact sum is determined by the Dollar rate.

  2. I'm simply curious to know which kibbutz you're involved with. Good luck to you!

  3. Boomerang is right. The dollar is a weak currency at the moment. The kibbutz movement quotes the price in dollars to simplify things for the overseas visitor. The  payment itself may be in the equivalent of the designated dollar amount. If they will accept actual dollars from you now, do it. Otherwise, you may lose out in the exchange.

  4. you can pay for it ( and everything else) in sheckles. the us dollar is popular and used for trading. have fun.

  5. whats a Kibbutz??
