As being a 13 year old boy, I am constantly finding myself in fights, and then on the ground. Does anybody know a way that I can get back up and hit my opponent at the same time without making myself vulnarable while I get up?

  1. Yes, its called the spring kick. place your hands on the ground beside your head. Pull in your feet until your heals touch your butt. Then arch your back, and kick with both of your feet. If you hit your opponent, he will stagger back and you then  let your momentum carry you up to a standing position. This move takes practice. E-mail me if you need more moves from Ki' Tsune Ken.

  2. I have no idea what mail4 is talking about. a "spring kick"? Who have you seen do this,mail4, Jackie Chan or Jet Li? Or Maybe Chow Yun Fat??

Realistically, if you tried this, the force of kicking your opponent would counteract any "momentum" you might gain through this technique. this is basic physics (for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Unless you outweigh your opponent by AT LEAST a 2:1 ratio, you will find yourself still on the ground after attempting this technique) Unless, of course, you were on the set of a martial arts movie made in Hong Kong, where  airial wires are frequently used to pull off the incredible, but physically impossible, moves that you see.

You have three options available to you if you are unfortunate enough to find yourself in a schoolyard fight:

    1) DON'T GET KNOCKED DOWN!!! this is a corollary to my often stated AVOIDANCE technique. If you stay out of a bad situation, you don't have to bother with deciding how to GET out.

    2) Take, or keep, your opponent with you on the ground. This will usually equalize the situation, unless you find yourself on the bottom. So, once again, AVOID being on the bottom. Easier to get up and away if you are the one in control of the tussle.

    3) Use your feet to maintain distance. There are multiple targets of opportunity from a ground position: ankles, knees, crotch, stomach, even the head if they are aggressive and bend down to hit you. And, as some else stated here, once you land a blow that slows/stops your opponent, crab walk away until you have enough distance to stand.

One final note: as the father of FOUR teenage boys, I suggest you ask yourself one big question: what is YOUR ownership in confrontations escalating to a physical fight? Are you really trying to diffuse and avoid the fights, or do you let your opponent get the best of you mentally and drag you down to his unintelligent level? If you can answer this question truthfully, then you may find that your original question no longer requires an answer. As I said, I have a penchant for advocating Avoidance as the best and most effective technique to use in not losing a fight.
