Kicker/Mtx (expensive) v.s. Sony (cheap)?

Ok... Ive got 4 sony xplod 12" subs, a 1200W amp and a 600W amp. I drive a blazer so ive got plenty of room. All these subs are hooked up into a monster box. Ive heard systems before, and nothing even touches how loud mine goes. It kinda feels like the car is gonna fall apart whenever i crank it on a low song. Now some of my friends have more expensive systems. 2 kickers, 2mtx's, 2 pioneer premiers, stuff like that. Their stuff cost them all like over 1000 bucks, and they say its because their stuff is "better" than mine. Im just kinda wondering... is 2 kickers/mtx really better than 4 sonys? If so... how? Because i KNOW my speakers hit way harder and sound way better than anyone else's ive seen.

  1. As long as it sounds good....who cares?  Go get you a cheap db meter from radio shack, and tell them numbers dont lie.  As long as you like the sound, dont sweat it....I got 4 12" kenwood subs that I paid 46 dollars a piece for, hooked up to a rockford t1000bd and for 700 bucks, I gotta louder system than dudes who have spent 2 grand or more.

  2. this is all that really matters

    CEA-2006 Compliant

On May 28, 2003, the Consumer Electronics Association published standard CEA-2006, "Testing & Measurement Methods for Mobile Audio Amplifiers." This "voluntary" standard advocates a uniform method for determining an amplifier's RMS power and signal-to-noise ratio. Using 14.4 volts, RMS watts are measured into a 4-ohm impedance load at 1 percent Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) plus noise, at a frequency range (for general purpose amplifiers) of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4 ohms. This applies to both external amplifiers and the amplifiers within in-dash receivers.

CEA-2006 allows consumers to be able to compare car amplifiers and receivers on an equal basis. Manufacturers who choose to abide by the new standard are able to stamp their products with the CEA-2006 logo that reads: "Amp Power Standard CEA-2006 Compliant."

all of the brand amps/radios that you named are CEA-compliant so they put out their advertised RMS wattage with minimum distortion

your setup will be louder than the more expensive ones depending on how they are hooked up because you have twice the cone surface area and that plays into the amount of bass just like the RMS wattage and the speakers sensitivity

I also know for a fact that all kicker amps come with birth certificates that show that amps particular wattage because each amp is tested before being boxed up, so you could say that some amps are better and with the kickers (my favorite brand) the cirtificate is always higher than the advertised wattage

so when its all said and done you have the advantage of more surface area and you could have it set up better than your friends, but those are "better" brands

  3. Well Sony is a cheap brand, but if you like what you have then who cares what's better to others? The key about having a sound system is being happy for yourself and not what others think. That's why people spend thousands, because they've heard systems and want to be better. If it costs you less than $500 to run a system that pleases you like no other then by all means buy it! I have two MTX's with a JL 1000/1 amplifier in a dual ported bass slammers box. Everything cost me over $1500 with speakers and blah blah, and I enjoy it so much that I hate getting out of my car. It's all about you man, but if I do spit the truth, I'd say 2 kicker L7's could match up against the sony's, and so could MTX 9500's. More money though, depending on how it's set up. Have a good one.

  4. lol kicker mtx JL(personal pref) ALL make entry level stuff and all make high end stuff ... i have a 12w7 and a 1000/1 your talkin 2000 dollars for 1 sub and 1 amp there IS a reason they cost that much better products used more R&D  but yes kicker and mtx make better high end stuff but thier entry level items are very comparable to sony xplod but ultimately kicker and mtx are better than sony ie sony will sell you a 1000 watt amp for 100 dollars because it will do 1000 @14.4 volts briged into a .5ohm load for 3 seconds until it blows up
