Kicker Neil Rackers joins Washington Redskins on a one-year deal – NFL News
Former Houston Texans kicker, Neil Rackers, who became a free agent after the last National Football League (NFL) season after playing two seasons for the Texans, has agreed to terms with Washington Redskins on a one-year deal, the player told FOX 26 Sports.
The Redskins have not made any official announcement yet, but the player informed that he had met with the franchise’s head coach, Mike Shanahan, and special teams’ coach, Danny Smith, and had a good conversation with them.
Redskins already have a Graham Gano serving as their kicker and the addition of Rackers to the squad will increase competition between the two kickers to earn more field time.
Rackers said:
"We're headed to Washington. I visited with Coach (Mike) Shanahan and (special teams coach) Danny Smith out there yesterday and really enjoyed what they had to say. I'll be competing for a job with Graham Gano, who is an established, good kicker.”
Rackers, 35, started his professional NFL career in 2000 with Cincinnati Bengals. He played three seasons for the Bengals and joined Arizona Cardinals in 2003.
He played seven seasons as a Cardinal and joined the Texans in 2010. After playing two seasons with Texans, Rackers did not get a call back from them and he eventually became a free agent.
By the looks of the things, Rackers did not want to leave Houston in the first place. However, he did not have enough options.
Texans did come up with a deal for the Rackers, but the player was expecting a long-term deal with an acceptable salary.
“We've had promises for awhile now on a long-term deal and they came to us with a minimum offer. So we just felt like the opportunity for advancement was not in Houston.”
The Texans’ chapter is over, at least for now, for the player, and he is looking forward to having a good time in Washington.
He said:
“I am really excited to go to Washington. Really excited to compete. Really excited to hopefully win a job and be the guy in Washington."
Meanwhile, Redskins have also signed linebacker, Chris Wilson, who was also a free agent. He has also played for the Redskins before.
