Question:

Kicker s10L5 Need help with amplifier, please!!!?

Kicker is 450 rms power each sub. There is two subs, they are 1200 watt power peak, 900 rms (together).

Should I get 'mono-amp'

or

"2 channel amp"???

the subs are able to handle 1200 watts peak, but the RMS is 900. Can i get an amp that is said to be 1800 watt, 900 RMS?

Do i only need to match up the "RMS"? Or do i need to match up the "RMS" and Watt peak power???

And one more question, if the amplifier is 900RMS at 2 ohm mono, and i am going to hook it up to the subs 'parallel', would each sub only get 1 ohm? is it bad? should i look for an amp that is 900RMS at 4ohm?

Can my car's factrory alternator produce enough power for 900RMS power amp and speakers, or willl i have to replace that?

THANK YOU SO MUCH :))

  1. Question (1):

    Should I get 'mono-amp'

    or

    "2 channel amp"???

Answer (1):  You Can Get A 2-Channel Amp But Mono

(1-Channel) Amps Are Highly Recommended For Subs

Question (2):  the subs are able to handle 1200 watts peak, but the RMS is 900. Can i get an amp that is said to be 1800 watt, 900 RMS?

Answer (2):  Again Focus On Rms Not Peak! F**K Peak. Peak Doesnt Mean S**T Just Picture It Not There @ All! Rms Counts! The More Rms The Better!

Question (3):  Do i only need to match up the "RMS"? Or do i need to match up the "RMS" and Watt peak power???

Answer (3):  Yes You Just Answered Your Question You Just Need To Match Up (RMS) Not Peak! Match The Rms On The Amp With The RMS On Your Subs. For Example Lets Say You Have 2 12'' Subs 1200 Peak (Doesnt Matter) & 500 Rms (Matters)! Together They Are 2400 Peak & 1000 Rms.  If You Would Want For Your Subs To Be Fully Powered You Would By A Mono Amp That Has 1000 Rms. And Your Subs Are 900 Rms Together If You Buy A Amp That Has 950 Or More Turn The Amp Down. Its Bad To Over Power Subs Even Is Its By 50 More Rms. Your Subs Will Blow! Always Stay Close Or At The Rms Amount Of Your Subs. Oh Yeah Another Thing. ''DONT UNDERPOWER SUBS!'' Its Okay If You Subs Are Underpowered By 200 Rms (Max!) But They Should Not Be Underpowered @ All. But If Your Subs Are Under Powered By 300-1000 RMS Thats Bad! If You Ever Manage To Underpower Subs By That Much RMS That Will Cause Your Subs To Go ''SOUND DEAF!''.

Question (4):  And one more question, if the amplifier is 900RMS at 2 ohm mono, and i am going to hook it up to the subs 'parallel', would each sub only get 1 ohm? is it bad? should i look for an amp that is 900RMS at 4ohm?

Answer (4):  Its Not Bad To Get A 2 Ohm Load On Your Amp. Most Amps Gets More Power On 2 Ohm Loads (Mostly On 1 Ohm Loads) Than They Do On 4 Ohm & 8 Ohm Loads. And Yes You Would Have To Do Parallel Wiring If You Have 4 Ohm Subs In Order To Get A Decent 2 Ohm Load! Or You Can Just By Dual 2 Ohm Subs Instead Of Dual 4 Ohm Subs If You Want To. But If You Want Your Amp To Last Really Long Just Use The 4 Ohm Load.

Question (5):  Can my car's factrory alternator produce enough power for 900RMS power amp and speakers, or willl i have to replace that?

Answer (5): No Your Stock Car Alternator Cannot Produce 900 Rms (It Can But Most Likely It Depends On What Car It Is) And Shortly Like In A Week Or So Your Alternator Will Die!

Thats Why Its Highly Recommeded To Get A Ho

(High Output) Alternator And Or Maybe A Second Battey Like Kinetik Or Optima. Usally When People Hook Up Audio Equipment They Hook It Up To The Alternator & The Battery. If You Want To You Can Just Hook It Up To The Battery & Not The Alternator But You Would Have To Charge Your Battery Up Everyday!

Heres A Mono Amp That Will Fully Power Your Subs Its Also CEA-2006 Compliant So It Really Puts Out That Amount Of Wattage!

P.S: Sorry For This Super Duper Long A** Answer

  2. You can really get a mono or 2 channel amp. A mono is preferable, but more importantly is the quality of the sound. A class D amp is the best to use. Often the RMS wattage is cleaner and louder, so you get more with lower RMS wattage. Class D amps are generally more expenisve, but def better. If you would rather go with a 2 channel amp you can, but try to avoid it if you can.

Kickers are solid woofers so you can probably go 900rms 1800 peak without damaging them, but I would try to stick with the highest quality amp possible. If you are getting cheaper amps, then I wouldnt worry about matching RMS or peak, mostly because many companies overrate their amps. (Audiobahn, Kenwood, etc) Higher end amps like Alpine, MTX etc tend to correctly or underrate their wattage.

I can not answer your question about parallel ohms, sorry....

Your alternator will be fine, but you will want to invest in a higher farad battery capacitor (bat cap) The higher the better, 3 - 5 farad. ( I remember something like 1 farad per 300 watts??). You may also want to invest in a Optima yellow top battery.  They are specially made for audio systems that will drain a battery quickly and eliminate your headlights dimming.

Other than that you should be fine. good luck!

  3. dont get the 2-channel amp, get a mono class d because they are made just for subs so they run cooler and are designed to push out low notes (frequencies)

as far as how to wire them (and the size of the needed amp) it cannot be answered without more info on the subs- are they the 2 or 4ohm version

the amp needed will have about 900watts RMS (peak/max wattage means nothing at all) @ the correct impedance (ohms)

here is a chart to help you with your wiring (you put in your sub setup -DVC or SVC with the impedance- and it will show you your wiring options for different final impedances at the amp) http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/woofer...

as far as what brand of amp to get (i would get one to match the subs, and kicker is my favorite) any amp that matches the needed specs and is CEA-compliant which means that the amp makes or exceeds the advertised RMS wattage with minimum distortion)

here are the top CEA-compliant brands

    Alpine

    Bazooka

    Blaupunkt

    Clarion

    Eclipse

    Infinity

    JBL

    JL Audio

    Kenwood

    Kicker

    MTX

    Pioneer

    Polk Audio

    Rockford Fosgate

    Sony

as far as your alternator it depends on the model of car, most alternators can take about 800watts RMS before needed the big3 (v8 SUVs and trucks can handle more)- but here is a easy way to test

with the car started turn on your AC and/or rear defrost while the car is idling with the headlights on at night, then turn up the volume past halfway- If the lights dim (very noticeable) or the RPMs drop you will need to upgrade
