Question:

Kicking and possession in rugby league?

I'm just getting into rugby, so this is probably a stupid question. In rugby league, if a team kicks the ball and recovers it in play, does the team get a new set of tackles? Or is it considered a continuation of the same possession?

  1. if the other team do not touch the ball/ the ball is still in play then you do not start with zero tackles. it's still your ball

  2. It all depends what happened between the time of kick and the recovery.  If the ball isn't played at by the opposition team then the tackle count stays the same.  If an opposition plays at the ball and knocks the ball on or does any other error or penalty and the original teams tackle count goes to Zero.  If the Opposition plays at the ball but commits no error or penalties the tackle count just restarts.

  3. It's continuation of the same set.

The only time you get a new set of tackles if the other team touches it and you get the ball back.

  4. the kick is counted as possesion. if you recover the ball without an oppenent playing at the ball it is still the same tackle. but if you kick the ball and oppenent charges it down or plays at it and you recover the ball the tackle count is then restarted to zero.

  5. if the team kicking the ball regathers the ball without the other team touching the ball it continues on the same tackle until such time as there is a tacckle completed or the ball is turned over.
