Hey everyone!

Yesterday my taekwondo instructor had us do a combination of Spin outer cresent kick followed by a butterfly kick and land with a chop and then a punch. Everytime i would do my kicks i would go the other way, land funny or not land at all, and I couldn't get my kicks high. I am holding back because I am afraid that I will fall. Please help!

  1. There are times in training that I just look at something and say, "Yeah, I'm not going to get that today." I step back and don't worry about it. If you want it badly, go outside and work on the first part (spin outer crescent kick), then each subsequent part separately until you can do each without trouble. Then start combining them. Try the crescent followed by butterfly. Then butterfly followed by chop. Work on the grass and be patient. If you feel like you're not getting it, stop. Your mind isn't in it at that time so take some time away.

Truthfully, we do martial arts because they are fun. Not because we have to and certainly not if it becomes a chore to do it. When you're getting frustrated, don't push yourself (you'll only build contempt for your art and yourself), but rather, have the attitude, "I am not able to do this yet."

Finally, realize that falling is natural, and you can't jump without falling back down somehow. Try learning some breakfalls and practice them and trust them to keep you safe.

Best of luck and keep going!

  2. Dont listen to those other kids im a brown belt with about 4 years of experience all you hafto do is practice more thengive your self time!!

  3. Wait - you said that you can do a flying kick and then not land at all?  That's AWESOME!  That means you can FLY!

Honestly, practice your footwork.  Without throwing the kicks, go through the footwork that is needed for this series.  Once your footwork is solid, throw the series slowly and watch your balance.  Once you feel stable doing this slowly, work on throwing the series with some power.

You'll get it, just be patient, and think of the series in parts - once you get each part, put them together and impress your instructor!

  4. take your time, you shouldn't have to try too hard. If you do take your time, if your afraid to fall your not ready. taekwondo mats dont hurt as bad as you think when you fall. and if it hurts to bad to fall, stick to the basics

  5. if you are afraid to fall, either your instructor is going too fast, or you need to handle your basics first before you start on the harder things.

try practicing yourfalls on your own at home or try for some one on one with a partner from class

  6. you have to let go because thats the only way to learn.you are not at your class to be perfect if that were the case you would not need to be there.

  7. haha keep practicing, dont worry about falling, thats prolly the reason you cant do it :) like sometimes when your learning acrobatic moves, you cant really do it until you stop being afraid of getting hurt

  8. Yup I get you. I never did those kicks you mentioned,  but I always get hurt from falling the wrong way whenever I try something a bit more complicated the first few times. All you need to do is convince yourself that you can do it and not be afraid of falling. After all if a baby was afraid of falling he'd never learn how to walk, now would he? ;)

You need to have the same mentality, you have to think: "Oh I fell, big deal. NOW I have to do it well.".

At least that's how I do it and it usually works. Good luck!
