Question:

Kidneys and blood pressure?

Traditionally my BP has been around 120/80. I am 18 and healthy.

However over the summer (using machines at stores and a self-testing device) my systolic blood pressure is always high, from 135 to 160 (usually in high 40s). The diastolic is a little better, usually 76-90, usually in the 80s.

Now I worry this could be my kidneys maybe? My kidneys are healthy but I work out hard and take supplements so I worry that may have affected my kidneys.

When kidney trouble causes hypertension, what are the blood pressure levels? My levels are high, but not super high.

  1. Your levels are abnormally high and you need to get to your doctor as soon as possible.  Kidney function and high BP are related but in your case you don't know if your blood pressure may be causing kidney problems or if your kidneys are causing high blood pressure.  Please don't delay in getting this checked out.  The dialysis centers are full of people that did not take care of themselves when they had the chance.

  2. What exact supplements do you take? What's the dose, how frequent do you take it?

Your BP is higher than the normal. It's in pre-hypertension stage..

Kidneys have direct effect on the BP, primarily because of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in our body. It regulates BP, may be high or low, it depends.

Try also taking your BP on two separate occassions. Your BP is not abnormally high.

  3. those reading would vary. the machines in stores are not very accurate for the most part. you need to see a Dr and have a baseline B/P established, then have it monitored routinely to see if it varies from there. High B/P related to kidney problems would also come with the symptoms of renal distress.
