World Book is a good "real" encyclopedia that is written simply enough that most kids with a 4th grade or higher reading level can use it on their own.  Younger kids rarely need an encyclopedia, but if they do a parent could help them.  No need to spend big bucks on a kids set that will only be useful for a few years, get the real thing.

Kids can use a real encyclopedia. The sooner they learn, the better.
