  1. My son used to like coffee, too.  So we gave him 1/3 cup coffee and filled it the rest of the way with water.  He never knew the difference.

  2. Decaf coffee still has caffeine in it, and caffeine is bad for little kids; not only does it prevent them from concentrating in school, it's also a diuretic and makes you dehydrated. If you're giving her coffee, you should force her to drink some water or some other hydrating drink to make up the difference. You didn't mention if she likes fruit juice. Perhaps you could give her some Gatorade--that's very hydrating. And if she doesn't like plain water, perhaps you could try some Crystal Lite powder or another drink mix. I hated the taste of plain water when I was a kid, but now, as a teenager, I drink scarcely anything else. Also, try giving her mineral water, tomato juice, and a variety of other things that kids usually don't like--you may be very surprised at what she likes!

  3. actually, decaf coffee still has some caffeine in it.  not very much, but some. In any event, coffee is not a healthy drink for a 5 year old to be drinking

  4. coffee is not good for a 5 yr old. my did not like to drink water at first but i told then if they are really thirsty they will drink it. once a week i will make lemonade and kool-aid. once they are done with that they have to drink water. we have ozarka water delivered so they can get their own water which they love. we only drink drink sodas if we are eating out. or on the weekend. make her learn to drink something else besides coffee if she throws a tantrum then oh well eventually she will get thirsty. i have a five yr old who throws a  tantrum about everything. but he gets over it and then drinks his water. if that doesn't work go to drastic measures tell her if she doesn't drink anything she will get real sick and have to go the hospital and get needles up her arm.  that's what i have to do to get my boys to take their medicine.

if you don't agree the that's fine. but remember i didn't judge you for giving your 5 yr old  coffee.

  5. There is VERY VERY little caffeine in decaf, chocolate has WAY more.  There is no problem with giving a child decaffeinated coffee.  It actually has antioxidants, and it a fine drink without the caffeine and NO sugar.  The caffeine in coffee is also what causes it be a mild diuretic.  To add  nutrition in it you can add a substantial amount of milk to it.  Pour her a cup that contains 3/4 milk and 1/4 coffee.  Coffee has such a strong flavor that she would probably enjoy this.  Fruit juices that most parents give kids are way worse for young children than decaffeinated coffee.  They are the equivalent to giving a child a can of soda with a vitamin C pill.  Even gatorade and the like has about 3/5 of the sugar that a normal soda contains.  Gatorade is masked as a hydrating healthy drink, but in reality it is not.  It is only useful for high endurance athletes who need to replenish sodium, magnesium, and potassium and well as their water content.  Water is also very important for a child to drink, so you should also add a large amount of this to her diet.  My children will not drink plain water, but I had a VERY SMALL amount of juice.  I'm talking about 1/6 juice and the rest water.  Just a tiny bit for some flavor.  Overall, your doing fine, just add a lot more milk to her DECAF coffee, and add some more flavored water to her diet.  Good luck

  6. wow your daughter has crazy taste...my kids tried coffee and almost puked! but as another poster said...have her drink a glass of water or orange juice before she has her coffee, lol...that's so funny to say about a 5 year old...just curious...does she wake up in the morning and need her coffee??? lol, :)

  7. Coffee is not a good choice even for adults and the decaf has it's downside too.

If she is only 5 yrs old, you should have some control over what she drinks. How about some tea rather than coffee and find a juice she can learn to like. She needs to be drinking plenty of water. If she gets thirsty enough she will drink whatever you give her. Have you tried lemonade or fruit drinks?

Maybe you could give her some Popsicles. I like those sometimes in stead of something to drink. You can make them in your ice trays to or they make special things to make the Popsicles in. Tupperware use to have them.

Again, if she refuses all of those choices, let her get so thirsty and get her to drink water. After that, she may find that some of the others choices are not so bad. But, coffee is one of the worst things you can give her. Decaf is not good for you either.

Good luck! Sound like your 5 yr. old is in control of you.

  8. even if its decaf. dont give it to her

ask you doctor to recommend something

  9. How about (weak) tea with milk sweetened with a bit of honey?  I think kids in the U.K. drink this from the time they drink from a cup, or at least they use to.

  10. Tell her she has to drink a glass of water first before she can have her coffee...
