  1. My kids like Reader Rabbit.  You can get it for different age levels.  But to be totally honest, the best way to help your 6 year old read is to practice, practice, practice, with actual books.  Computers can't take the place of humans.  Our library carries PM Books, which are beginner reading books that are in levels.  Your child starts at level 1 and works up through 30 or so levels and ends up in chapter books.  We read one book each night before bed, and my kids are great readers now.

  2. Depends on his/her reading level.

There are some awesome phonics book packages you can get from scholastic or from any bookstore really in many different characters.

I taught Kindergarten (5-6) and all of the kids at the end of the year could read the Clifford pack 1 (the first link)

Many kids were starting on the spongebob packs (which are harder) and were bringing in d**k and jane, and other characters to read.

Here are some links to those phonics packages at scholastic.

  3. The Dept. of Education recommends:

    http://www.leapsandbounds.org/

The core of this program is to read aloud from books and include language in a variety of activities every day. Besides reading to children, components of LEAP include games and pictures for building vocabulary and expressive language skills, phonological awareness, knowledge of the letters of the alphabet, concept development and fine motor, pre-writing skills. Teachers are encouraged to talk to the children as often as possible during the day, modeling correct grammar and a rich vocabulary. Teachers also incorporate counting and word games, nursery rhymes, fairy tales, and creative play in learning centers throughout the day. Engaging children in activities with environmental print, literature, writing, and language experience charts encourages print awareness.

    Also try the Letter People

The kids LOVE it It has 26 characters that teach the letter sounds

For Instance Mr B has Beautiful Buttons and Mr. M has a Munching Mouth.

  4. There is no one BEST reading program.  It depends upon the child's learning style, and if there are learning disabilities present, it should influence the choice.  And who is going to TEACH the program?  A parent?  A teacher?  A reading specialist?

That said...there are some good programs published that work for the general population.   I like the Saxon programs for both reading and math.  Wilson reading is popular, although I don't know that one myself.

Whatever program you choose, it should be PHONEMIC and phonologically based.
