I was wondering if kidz in media is a scam, because i was approached by a talent scout at the mall and she said blah blah you have a fun style and have a "look" we want blah blah come to the free screen test on sunday. And she gave us a card with a web site on it...she wasnt passing it out to everyone she actually had shopping bags and she like RAN up to us and was like "excuse me" and just tlking about it. Has anyone experienced them?

  1. I took my 6 year old son to their screen test about 3 months ago and we had a great experience.  Your child will get to read a commercial on camera and then you will get to meet representatives from entertainment companies.  I had always though about getting my son involved in acting because we had been approached several times before.  I had never acted upon it because I had always heard horror stories about scams and what not.  This time we decided to go for some reason.  I can't tell you enough how glad I am that we did.  My son just got a theatrical agent this past week.  A very reputable one at that.  Over the past 3 months, we've had the opportunity to work on 5 jobs with him as a "background actor".  He has done 2 commercials, 1 film, and 2 tv shows!  He is only 6 - but he is really excited about going to acting classes and learning. We are very excited about what is to come.  I know it seems weird to be approached while shopping.  I always felt that way when it happened to us.  If I would not have take then chance and gone to this Kidz In Media screening, I never would have met the people who have gotten me where I am now so yes, it is worth going if you ask me!

  2. Talent scouts in malls are ALWAYS scams. Here's how it's done:

    1. Training. Acting/Dancing/Singing classes are a good start. You start to get some talent under your belt, and grow your confidence. Plus, if after about a year of classes if you realize you really don't like it, it'll be easier for you to back out.

    2. Experience. Do Community Theater, act in your school play, get in some student films, etc. You'll want to do as many productions as possible to have a great resume.

    3. Agent. http://www.soyouwanna.com/site/syws/tale...

As you can see, you're going to need to spend at least two years (At the VERY least. Usually you'll need three to four.) building yourself up. You'll want to make sure this is what you really want to do before you start getting into this.

Also, you should NEVER have to pay for anything when it comes to getting an agent. If an agent tells you to take special classes from them or a website asks for a credit card number, that is a red flag that it is a scam. Some of the big scammers out there are: John Robert Powers, Millie Lewis, John Casablancas, Proscout, Model Look, Barbizon.

Hope this helps and I wish you a fantastic career. =)
