Kien Keat, Boon Heong seize Men’s Doubles title in Malaysia Open GP Gold 2012
Men’s Doubles crown of Malaysia Open GP Gold belonged to native duo Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong who thrashed their compatriots Kah Ming Chooi and Yao Han Ow in final match on May 6, 2012.
Both Malaysian teams sweat hard to land on the podium but the 33-minute tussle ended in favour of top seed couple with concluding margin of 21-15 and 21-19.
The partnership of Kien Keat and Boon Heong was at its best all the way through two games and their relatively inexperienced rivals were no comparison to them in the title match.
In opening game, Kien Keat-Boon Heong were little sluggish in the start as they kept trailing behind their opponents until 7-2 but they picked up their speed and caught them at 8-8.
They raised their total to 11-8 before the one-minute break. After the interval, both veterans maintained the same momentum and strengthen their grip with 16-9 score on the board.
The scratch pair of Kah Ming Chooi and Yao Han Ow built some pressure at the last stage by adding three consecutive points in their total but it was not enough to stop their higher ranked challengers from bagging first match point with a distinctive margin
of 21-15.
Both teams made the crowd gasp with their breath-taking performance in next game. They earned great deal of admiration from the spectators as well as from the critics for playing premium class badminton.
Ming Chooi and Han Ow, who were underdogs earlier in this event, established their grip again in the beginning but they frittered away their effort in later part of the game which cost them the crucial match point.
The second set opened with their immediate dominance as they gained a notable three-point advantage.
However, national number one pair Kien Keat-Boon Heong accelerated their pace and managed to end first half with 11-8 score on the board.
They maintained this decent lead until game point situation and their compatriots Ming Chooi-Han Ow had to bow down despite of putting decent show of skills.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong emerged as Champions by putting a tight yet decisive total of 21-19.
