Kieran Merrilees overpowers Krasimir Yankov to ease into second round: 2011 Bulgarian International
Scotland’s Kieran Merrilees surged into Men’s Singles second round after proving his worth in the first round against Bulgaria’s Krasimir Yankov at the 2011 Bulgarian International, in Bulgaria, on October 7, 2011.
Kieran pulled the trigger from the opening points and maintained high pace in the game throughout the match. He ended it in straight games by taking a court time of just 31 minutes.
Krasimir failed to play a fast game as his opponent spared no chance for him to put up resistance. He committed unforced errors on several occasions and missed many easy chances to score points which caused him to suffer with defeat from the hands of the
Scottish shuttler.
Kieran started his journey in the event by playing flawless badminton against the Bulgarian and took no time in setting up his dominance in the match. He dictated the pace of the game by taking the bird early and made his rival to work really hard for every
point.
At the end of the first part of the opening set, Kieran was leading with a comfortable difference of 11-5. After the break, the Scottish remained on the winning track by playing with precision. The spirited Kieran missed no chance to build pressure on his
challenger and clinched the first game by taking just 14 minutes, with a 21-10 score on the board.
In the second set of this opening round match, Krasimir played attacking badminton in the first few rallies and remained close to his opponent. However, he failed to continue playing at the same speed and became a little slow but his rival refused to drop
the speed of the game.
Kieran injected more pace in the rallies to disturb the balance of his challenger. His planned and accurate play helped him in winning the second game with a seven-point margin of 21-14 in 17 minutes. The overall score of this one-sided match was 21-10 and
21-14.
In the second round, Kieran will be up against the top seed, Pablo Abian of Spain, who defeated India’s Sai Praneeth B. in the opening round of the tournament.
