Kieran Murphy wins Boys 100m back-stroke: Day three – Australian Age MC Championships
Kieran Murphy of Central Cairns won gold medal of Boys 100m back-stroke in 19 years and above category on concluding day of the 2011 Australian Age Multi Class (MC) Championships. The meet ended on Sunday, October 9, at the Australian Institute of Sport
(AIS) in Canberra.
Murphy dominated the 100m back-stroke playoff and captured gold medal of the event in an astonishing manner. The 19-year-old showed his pace to the world of disabled swimmers as he snatched the title of the event and met the expectations of his fans.
Murphy, who has S13 disability, remained almost three seconds ahead of his strongest rival in the first-half of the swim as he touched the wall in a time of 34.53 seconds. He was followed by Keiran Corry of NSW Nelson Bay, who completed his initial lap with
an effort of 37.08 seconds.
Moments later, the arena witnessed the splendid effort of Murphy, who picked up his pace in the second-half and extended his lead to almost five seconds over Corry. He made his way towards the finishing wall in a splendid time of 37.29 seconds, while his
closest competitor remained considerably slower than him.
Murphy won the gold medal of back-stroke discipline in a time of 1 minute and 11.82 seconds. His challenger, Corry, elevated his efforts in the second lap but failed to overcome Murphy’s dominating efforts and hit the finishing wall in a competitive time
of 1 minute and 16.75 seconds for silver medal.
In the meantime, the crowd experienced the breath-taking effort of Blacktown’s Hayden Smith, who secured the podium for bronze medal. Smith, who has the S10 disability, proved his eligibility for the bronze medal by submitting a third fastest time of 1 minute
and 13.48 seconds.
Murphy was overjoyed with his impeccable swim in the back-stroke discipline while the gold medallist articulated his desire of representing Australia at the elite levels of international swimming. Furthermore, the winners were called upon the podium to receive
medals and accolades for their invincible efforts after the session’s conclusion.
