Kieren Perrow and Gabriel Medina advance to Round 4 of Rip Curl Pro Search – 2011 ASP World Tour
The 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour action continued at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, America, on Wednesday, November 2, as Australia’s Kieren Perrow took on Brazil’s Adriano de Souza in the third, whereas Brazil’s Gabriel Medina
squared off with Hawaii’s Fredrick Patacchia in the fourth heat of Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco’s Round 3.
The third heat saw Perrow prevail over De Souza rather comfortably to go through into the next round while bringing the competition to a premature end for the latter.
Medina completely stole the show in the fourth heat as he came up with an outstanding performance to down Patacchia and clinch the Round 4 spot, consequently eliminating his opponent from the competition.
Despite getting off to a disappointing start at the latest elite tour stop, Perrow had bounced back quite strongly in Round 2 to make his way into the third round, where the formidable Brazilian force, De Souza, awaited him. The contest was expected to be
nothing short of thrilling as both the surfers sought to extend their life in the competition.
As the third got under-way, De Souza made an early charge and soon managed to squeeze a 6.33 off a wave to take an early advantage. Keeping the momentum going, he went on to add another 5.10 points to his account, which took his two-wave total to 11.43 points.
The 34-year-old Perrow seemed a bit shaky in the early stages of the battle, but managed to find his rhythm just in time to lock a juicy wave and unload a string of impressive tricks on it to earn an 8.67. He soon followed it up with a 5.43-point wave to
get to a heat-total of 14.10 points, consequently capturing victory and thus advancing through into the next round.
The next heat saw the young Brazilian prodigy, Medina, take on Patacchia in a battle for survival. The 17-year-old Medina had looked in good touch on the first day of the competition and he continued to exhibit the same form in his latest heat.
As the heat kicked off, Medina took control of the battle early on through a 7.77-point wave and soon added an additional 7.60 points to his account, moving to a heat-total of 15.37 points.
Pushed on his back-foot by his Brazilian opponent, Patacchia hunted desperately for a good score, though to no avail. He managed to get a mere 1.43 and 3.93 off his top two waves to finish with a disappointing heat-total of 5.36 points. Finishing in a 10.01-point
deficit, the Hawaiian was forced to surrender victory to Medina, sending the young sensation through into the next round.
