Kieren Perrow and Kai Otton prevail in Round 2 of Hurley Pro – 2011 ASP World Tour
The exciting surfing action continued at the latest stop of the 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour named the Hurley Pro, with the seventh and eighth heat of Round 1, which went down at the iconic point-break of Lower Trestles in California,
America, on Monday, September 19.
The seventh heat saw Australia’s Kieren Perrow prevail over Portugal’s Tiago Pires to secure a Round 3 spot, removing his opponent from the contention for the event-title in the process.
Australia’s Kai Otton took an excellent come-from-behind victory in the eighth heat to defeat Brazil’s Raoni Monteiro and progress to Round 3, consequently eliminating his rival from the competition.
With another day of high performance waves on offer at the primary event site, the elimination battles between the world’s best surfers were expecting to be nothing sort of thrilling. None of the surfers was expected to let his rival walk away with the win
without putting up a determined fight.
The 34-year-old Perrow and ‘Portuguese Tiger’, Tiago Pires, faced each other in the seventh heat to try and see themselves off to the next round. Both the surfers had failed to make a solid impact on the first day, but they surely couldn’t afford a mediocre
performance in the Round 2 heat due to the sword hanging over their head.
As the heat kicked off, Perrow made a charge early on, locking a wave to score 6.53 points off it and take the lead. Pires did not have any luck with the waves for most part of the battle, but eventually came across a couple of decent ones later on, which
he utilised to collect 5.63 and 6.90 points, moving to a heat-total of 12.53 points.
As the heat-clock came dangerously close to the finishing time, Perrow managed to catch a wave and pull off a set of impressive manoeuvres to add an additional 6.93 points to his account, consequently finishing ahead of his rival with a heat-total of 13.46
points and walking away with the win.
The eighth heat pitted the 31-year-old Otton against Monteiro, who was proving to be quite a force over the last few months, in a battle for survival.
As the battle got underway, the Australian got off to a relatively decent start and earned 5.17 points off his first business-wave. Monteiro went through a series of waves before eventually moving ahead of his rival on the scoreboard with a 5.37-point wave.
As the heat progressed, both the surfers kept searching for another good score. The Brazilian managed to reach a heat-total of 10.60 points with a 5.23-point wave. Just when it looked like Monteiro was on his way to the third round, Otton locked a wave to
collect 5.93 points off it and finished with a heat-total of 11.10 points to take the win.
