Kieren Perrow and Taj Burrow put up solid performances in Round 3 of 2011 Billabong Pipe Masters
The second day of Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons continued to run at the famed North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, on Friday, December 9, with Australia’s Kieren Perrow taking on his compatriot Josh Kerr in the 11th heat, while the formidable
Australian force Taj Burrow squared off with the Hawaiian talent, Ian Walsh, in the 12th heat of Round 3.
Perrow treated the crowd to an exhibition of spectacular skills and style while facing Kerr in the 11th heat. Owing to the superb performance, Perrow was able to claim a convincing victory over the latter to advance through into the fourth round
while bringing the competition to an early end for his compatriot in the process.
The 12th heat did not feature any exquisite stunts from any of the two competitors, though a couple of rather modest waves allowed Burrow to secure his place in the next round, consequently eliminating Walsh from the competition.
The 34-year-old Perrow had been immensely troubled by the firing 15-to-20 foot waves during the first round, but made a strong come-back in the second round to extend his life in the event through the confirmation of his place in Round 3.
Facing Perrow in the third round was Kerr, who had looked to be in good form on the first day of the competition and definitely held the edge over his compatriot. However as the battle began, Perrow asserted his dominance from the world go. He got in a position
to catch a real juicy wave and utilised it to unleash a string of technical manoeuvres to post a 9.40 on the score-board. He soon added another 9.33 points to his account, moving to a heat-total of 18.73 points.
The situation looked quite dire for Kerr as his countryman had placed him under huge pressure through his onslaught. Not one to give up without a fight, Kerr desperately searched for a couple of competitive score, but had to eventually settle for a heat-total
of 11.60 points, consequently conceding an easy victory to Perrow.
The 12th heat saw Burrow take on Walsh in a battle for survival. Walsh had trouble adjusting to the huge waves on the first day of the event, though he had successfully avoided elimination by grabbing a win in Round 2. Things were bound to get
tougher for him in the following rounds and facing the ASP World Tour-veteran Burrow in an elimination round was hard-luck for him
Burrow merely locked on to three waves, but collected a 3.10 and 5.83 off them to finish with a heat-total of 8.93 points. Walsh responded with a 2.03 and 3.33-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 5.36 points. The 3.57-point deficit led to his elimination
from the competition.
