Kieren Perrow confirms his place in Rip Curl Pro Search Quarter-Finals – 2011 ASP World Tour
The surfing fans kept getting treated to a heavy dose of thrilling action at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, America, on Sunday, November 6, as the fourth round of Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco got under-way with Australia’s Kieren Perrow taking on his
compatriot Matt Wilkinson and America’s Taylor Knox in a battle for the Quarter-Final spot.
Despite turning out to be a low-scoring heat, the battle was definitely not short on intensity as the surfers remained engaged in a nail-biting contest until the very last minute. In the end, however, Perrow managed to get his hands on top honours to confirm
his place in the Quarter-Finals. Knox and Wilkinson rounded out the second and third place respectively, consequently getting relegated to Round 5.
Perrow and Knox had failed to get a solid start on the first day of the latest elite tour event, though they had managed to make amends in Round 2 and had looked to be in good form ever since. Wilkinson, on the other hand, had been simply amazing from the
very first day and looked to be in a threatening form. After dominating the Round 1 heat, he had collected yet another win with apparent ease in Round 3 to reach the fourth round.
With high performance waves and strong winds on offer at the primary event site, the first heat of Round 4 got under-way. The conditions were nothing close to ideal and were bound to put the experience and skills of the surfers to test.
As the battle for the Quarter-Final spot commenced, the 34-year-old Perrow got off to a relatively strong start by locking a wave to post a 5.00 on the score-board. Keeping the momentum going, he immediately followed it up with an even better 5.67-point
wave and moved to a heat-total of 10.67 points.
Pushed on the back-foot early in the heat, Knox tried to put up a fight and desperately hunted for a good score, though to no avail. After a lengthy and determined hunt, he only managed to get to a heat-total of 9.94 points, which comprised of a couple of
4.97-point waves. The score failed to threaten Perrow’s dominant position in the battle.
Wilkinson, who had been simply sensational so far in the event, was expected to offer a strong challenge to his compatriot, but he failed to live up to the expectations and came up with a rather lacklustre performance. Scoring a 4.70 and 4.73 off his top-two
waves, he eventually finished with a heat-total of 9.43 points to round out the third position.
The victory in the heat carried Perrow off into the Quarter-Final, while sending Knox and Wilkinson into the fifth round to surf once more in order to try and earn their place in the Quarter-Finals.
