Kieren Perrow eliminates Mick Fanning in Round 2 of Rip Curl Pro Search – 2011 ASP World Tour
The 10th of 11 stops on the 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco, continued to deliver high intensity action to the fans as Australia’s Mick Fanning took on his compatriot Kieren Perrow
in the sixth heat of Round 2 that went down at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, America, on Wednesday, November 2.
The battle kept the crowd interested until the very end, as both the surfers made desperate efforts to get their hands on victory. In the end, however, it was Perrow who managed to walk away with top honours, securing a place in the third round while bringing
the competition to a premature end for Fanning.
The latest elite tour event had not started off great for Perrow. The 34-year-old Australian had looked out of rhythm on the first day of the competition and failed to offer a solid challenge in his Round 1 heat, which had resulted in a third-place finish
for him. Relegated to the second round, he was now forced to take the long road to Round 3, though it was not going to be easy because of the pressure of elimination as well as the lack of confidence due to the Round 1 defeat.
However, the odds were definitely not against him as he was going to face Fanning in the battle for the Round 3 spot. The former two-time ASP World Champion had an equally weak start to the competition and exhibited a lack of rhythm during his previous heat.
Going against a more experienced surfer, the 30-year-old Fanning was surely going to find himself in a tough battle.
As the sixth heat of Round 2 kicked off in the high-performance waves of Ocean Beach, Perrow wasted no time in making his charge and caught a wave to unload a string of impressive tricks to post a 7.17 on the score-board. Fanning kept his countryman from
gaining a huge advantage by quickly responding with a 6.27-point wave, keeping the battle very much alive.
As the heat entered its late stages, Fanning managed to add another 5.90 points to his account, taking his two-wave total to 12.17 points. Sitting in the lead as the heat got close to an end, things looked bright for him, though nothing could be said with
certainty yet as his rival continued to hunt for a decent score.
Perrow’s effort paid off and he managed to find a wave that allowed him to unleash a flurry of spectacular manoeuvres. The wave earned him 9.17 points and took his heat-total to a decisive 16.34 points, consequently sealing the fate of the contest in his
favour and putting an end to Fanning’s Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco campaign.
